Community Teaching Projects

Teaching Thesis

In partnership with the Georgetown University Biology Department Senior Teaching Thesis program, SPI students participate in community based learning by developing curriculum modules for DC public schools, while also exploring scientific topics of interest to them. Working in pairs, Teaching Thesis students prepare and deliver twice weekly lessons in local DC public schools and analyze the learning experience of their students. Prior to senior year, the program provides students with formal training to introduce teaching and learning methods and principles and develop critical teaching skills.

Smithsonian Spark! Labâ„¢

SPI students will shape new activities at the Smithsonian Spark! Lab at the National Museum of American History. Launched in 2008, Spark!Lab aims to become a DC area focal point and national model for activities to provide students of all ages with innovative learning activities centered on the process of invention. SPI students will create, develop and launch new, hands-on activities at Spark! Lab to teach scientific principles to DC area K-12 students.
